Connecting people to place
Cambria Sports Culture CIC works across Wales with a focus on landscape, access and community. Our aim is to make it easier for people to access, use and understand the landscape of Wales, in a way that is practical, consistent and grounded in the places themselves. Our work centres on making it easier for people to engage with the places around them, both in a practical sense and in terms of understanding how those places have developed over time. This includes mapping, route development and the creation of accessible resources that can be used without specialist knowledge.ApproachThe emphasis is on clarity and usability.Projects are designed to be straightforward, structured and consistent, with a focus on long-term use rather than short-term activity. The aim is to remove barriers where possible, whether that relates to access, information or confidence. This reflects the nature of the areas in which the organisation works. Much of rural Wales is accessible in principle, but less so in practice, particularly for those who are not familiar with it. Providing clear routes and reliable information makes a practical difference.Powys WalksPowys Walks is a practical resource built around mapped routes across the county. It brings together a network of walks designed to be easy to follow, with consistent information on distance, terrain and starting points. The focus is on usability rather than volume, ensuring that each route can be used with confidence. The project draws on detailed mapping work and local knowledge, with routes selected to reflect both accessibility and variation in landscape.Powys HeritagePowys Heritage sits alongside this as a text-based resource. It brings together material on the county’s history, settlements, landscape, and cultural background, presented in a clear, structured format. The emphasis is on written content, allowing the detail to be set out without unnecessary complication. It reflects the same underlying work as Powys Walks, but approached from a different direction, focusing on context rather than routes. Both projects form part of the same wider programme.Powys Walks provides a way into the landscape through direct use. Powys Heritage provides context for understanding what is there. Between them, they are intended to support a more complete engagement with the county. They are designed to work independently but also to sit alongside each other where it is useful.LeadershipThe organisation is led by Steffan Roberts, Director of Cambria Sports Culture CIC.Steffan has spent a number of years working across the Powys landscape, developing a detailed understanding of its routes, terrain and patterns of use. His work combines practical mapping, route development and a focus on making the outdoors more accessible to local communities. He is a qualified Mountain Leader with experience supporting individuals and groups in a range of conditions. His approach emphasises safety, awareness of changing conditions, and helping people build confidence in the landscape.Through the CIC, he has led a programme of mapping and route identification across Powys, forming the basis for both Powys Walks and Powys Heritage. The work is grounded in direct knowledge of the county rather than abstract planning.Wider WorkAlongside these platforms, Cambria Sports Culture CIC continues to develop related activity, including further mapping across different areas, exploration of additional routes and locations, group walks and community engagement. This work is developed gradually with an emphasis on consistency rather than expansion for its own sake.Projects are intended to remain stable and usable over time. Where development takes place, it is done carefully, with a focus on maintaining clarity.
